Investing in a domain? Try to get .COMs.

Most of you already know this, and yes – TONZ is on a .NET. I know, :p . But can you imagine, how much a four letter .COM is worth, especially one as pronounceable and brandable as tonz? Even TONZ.net is worth a lot.

But when you are going for a domain name for a blog, usually you will have to get a longer than 5-6 word domain, then it is better to take up a .COM. Why? In case you ever want to sell off that domain, a .COM matters a lot. Actually .NET is also gathering a good momentum these days, and i have more than 4 domains in the .NET TLD (Top Level Domain) which is in fact only a small number considering my bag of .COMs.

It is indeed, hence, a good idea to go for .COMs or .NETs. .ORG is not suited for blogs, and neither is .INFO, but sometimes you might have to chose them if the other TLDs are gone or if you have budget issues. In case you have an issue of this sort, read this first.

Also, do not go for an extremely long domain name – it is irritating at most times.

The best would be a two-word pronounceable like this – www.GadgetMafia.com. How’s that? Yeah, it’s mine. :p It is good to spell and sound isn’t it? Admit it, yes. Don’t pick 2 words, one which end and the other start in the same letter, like www.atheisTTemple.com See the double Ts, there is a huge chance of mis-typos and you could lose a lot of traffic that way.

Also, ensure that the domain name registrar you are using is a good reputed organisation. Some companies have engaged in a horrendous craft called DoOmain Snatching. When you search for availability of a domain, if it is a good one, then they snatch it and register in their or their nominees names before you complete the registration.

So, use only reputed organisations/registrars – Recommendations.
